Elizabeth von Arnim's The Enchanted April was a best-seller when first published in 1922 (according to Publishers Weekly, it sold 40,000 copies in its first year of publication). By 1925 a stage adaptation had been produced on Broadway (the 1935 film was adapted not from von Arnim's novel, but from the play). Despite lackluster reviews—"nothing enchanting or slightly charming...an exceedingly dull affair" reads a 1942 Billboard review—the play seems to have been modestly successful and performed fairly frequently. According to the Federal Theater Project, the production advertised on the poster above dates from 1936–1941.
